1. MISCELLANEOUS

A large collection of architectural, topographical, natural history and other watercolours and drawings, from the 18th to 20th centuries, mostly priced at under £100, can be found here

2. SUFFOLK AND NORFOLK HOUSES AND CHURCHES

A collection of accomplished pen and ink drawings, a few in pencil, 1823 and 1824, by Thomas Ellis Rogers (1781-1844), mostly houses (31).

Rogers’ technique of squared and diagonal  hatching is of interest, if not unique then certainly rare, and is highly effective in adding shade and contrast to stonework and the like.

SUFFOLK: Mockbeggar’s Hall (2), Hessett Church, Framlingham Castle, West Stow Hall (pencil), Hadleigh Deanery Towers, Seckford Hall (3), Arwarton Hall including the Gatehouse (2), Gifford’s Hall (Stoke by Nayland), Helmingham Hall (pencil), Kentwell Hall (pencil).

NORFOLK: Breckles Hall (2), Middleton Tower, East Barsham Hall (2), Merton Hall (3), Wilby Hall (3).

Plus five other houses and a ruined church (some in pencil), location unknown.

One of the Arwarton Hall drawings is inscribed TER  and from this the artist was identified.

Thomas Ellis Rogers, Hessett Church, Suffolk, view from the south west, not showing the tower, dated 3 May 1823.

In 1807 Rogers was presented to the rectory of Lackford between Bury St Edmunds and Mildenhall to which the Crown living of Hessett was added in 1813. He married twice, in February 1812 to Merielina, daughter of Michael William Le Heup, lord of the manor of Hessett. She died in 1816, aged 25.

At St James’s, Bury St Edmunds on 25 April 1823 he married Sophia Mills. A few days later he drew this, his parish church, and within a year or so had drawn all the buildings in this collection.

3. THOMAS MOULE (1785-1851)

A large collection of pencil, pen and ink and watercolour sketches by the antiquarian, best known for his steel engraved county maps of England of the 1830s.

4. FRANCIS GROSE (1731-1791)

A small collection of pen and ink drawings and watercolours by or attributed to the great and eccentric antiquarian, draughtsman and lexicographer. Mostly Kent, including Dover, Graveney, Chalk near Gravesend, Rochester (3), Gillingham , Dartford and Greenford, Middlesex.

5. KENT

A large collection of topographical watercolours and drawings of Kent, mostly 18th and 19th centuries, including:

6. EARLY WORCESTER PORCELAIN

A large collection of watercolours of early Worcester porcelain tea cups, showing one half of the tea cup with its handle and also the pattern as a whole. Painted in the 1970s and 1980s.

7. THE REPTON FAMILY

A large collection of pencil and pen and ink drawings by the two architect sons of Humphry Repton – George Stanley Repton (1786-1858) and John Adey Repton (1775-1860).

Various designs and drawings, including St Philip’s Chapel, Regent Street, Osborne House, Whippingham Church, York Cathedral, Bicton, Aylsham Church, Springfield Chapel, the gravestone of Humphry Repton and funerary tombs.

8. TOPOGRAPHICAL & ARCHITECTURAL PENCIL DRAWINGS, 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries

A large collection of pencil drawings.

Including a good batch by the same hand, mostly 1840s and 1850s, mainly churches, especially Norfolk and Kent, generally 17x25cm:

9. ANNE MOWBRAY (1803-1869)

A large collection of charming drawings and watercolours by this amateur artist, carried out between 1823 and 1849. All are dated and inscribed on the front and more fully inscribed on the verso.

Including Dover, Banbury, Tewkesbury, Evesham, Matlock, Kenilworth Castle, Scarborough and The Rocks, Uckfield – the estate of her brother Richard Shuttleworth Streatfeild, mostly of the landscaped park. (The Rocks is now known as Buckswood Grange). Also Scotland (30), including Dryburgh Abbey, Dunkeld, Holy Loch, Loch Lomond, Loch Fyne, Loch Gilp and Gare Loch.

10. ARTHUR REES, SWANSEA ARTIST, 1930s

A large collection of pen and ink drawings including Shakespearean, 1930s and First World War; some after contemporary humourists and cartoonists like Strube and Bairnsfather.

11. NATURAL HISTORY

A large collection of mostly early 19th century natural history watercolours and pen and ink drawings.

I invariably acquire printed works, such as prints and engravings, alongside original works. They are often in their original frames and mostly date from the 18th and 19th centuries. These are usually portraits of the important figures of the day or topographical views.
