A fascinating combination of a pioneering female artist and photographer and a portrait of a leading suffragette.
Keturah Collings (1862-1948) worked as a high society portrait artist and photographer. From 1905 she worked from studios in both Mayfair and Marylebone. She was married to Esmé Collings an early filmmaker who worked with the celebrated filmmaker William Friese-Greene.
Caprina Fahey (1883-1959), née Charlotte Gilbert, daughter and youngest child of sculptor Sir Alfred Gilbert, was a British suffragette, active in the Women’s Social and Political Union from 1908 until the outbreak of World War 1. During this time she was twice imprisoned at Holloway Prison. In 1918 the Representation of the People Act was passed giving women aged over 30 the vote, the first step towards equal voting rights for men and women.
